MEANING: Baiyin lizard
PERIOD: Middle Jurassic
CONTINENT: Asia
Baiyinosaurus is a basal stegosaurian dinosaur that lived about 165 million years ago in the Middle Jurassic of what is now China. Typical of stegosaurs, it was a quadrupedal herbivore with two rows of spikes down its back. Though not preserved in the fossil record, it is likely that Baiyinosaurus had a large spike protruding backwards from its shoulder. Baiyinosaurus is an early diverging stegosaur, and its anatomy shows some transitional features between basal thyreophorans and its more derived relatives.
Abstract from paper: Stegosaurs are a minor but iconic clade of ornithischian dinosaurs, yet due to a poor fossil record, their early evolution is poorly understood. Here, we describe a new stegosaur, Baiyinosaurus baojiensis, gen. et sp. nov. from the Middle Jurassic Wangjiashan Formation of the Pingchuan District, Baiyin City, Gansu Province, China. The frontal of Baiyinosaurus possesses a unique characteristic among Stegosauria: it is wider than long and contributes to both the medial and anterior margins of the supratemporal fenestra. The character combinations of dorsal vertebrae of Baiyinosaurus are also different to other stegosaurs: its neural arches are not greatly elongated, its parapophyses are well developed, and its neural spines are axially expanded in lateral. The features of the frontal and vertebrae of Baiyinosaurus are reminiscent of basally branching thyreophorans, indicating that Baiyinosaurus is transitional in morphology between early thyreophorans and early-diverging stegosaurs. Systematic analysis shows that Baiyinosaurus is an early-diverging stegosaur.
Baiyinosaurus is from the Jurassic. The Jurassic is a geologic period that spanned from the end of the Triassic, 201 million y ears ago, to the beginning of the Cretaceous, 145 million years ago. It is the middle period of the Mesozoic Era. The start of the Jurassic was marked by the major Triassic-Jurassic extinction event. The end, however, has no clear boundary with the Cretaceous. By the beginning of the Jurassic, Pangea had begun rifting into two landmasses: Laurasia and Gondwana, and the climate was warm with no ice caps. Life on land was dominated by dinosaurs, and the first birds appeared, evolving from a branch of theropods. The oceans were inhabited by marine reptiles, while pterosaurs were the dominant flying vertebrates.
Baiyiniosaurus is a stegosaurian. Stegosauria is a group of herbivorous ornithischian dinosaurs that lived mainly during the Jurassic period, though there are some members known from the early Cretaceous. Stegosaurian fossils have been found mostly in the Northern Hemisphere.
Stegosaurians were armored dinosaurs; together with the ankylosaurs, they make up a larger group known as the thyreophorans. An early evolutionary innovation was the development of spikes as defensive weapons. Over time, these developed into much larger plates and spikes as the species within the group grew to larger size. These plates usually tend to run in two rows down the back, and end as spikes, known as thagomizers, at the tip of the tail.
